Pittsburgh real estate pioneer Howard W. Hannah, Jr. dies

Howard W. Hanna Jr., the founder of the real estate company that bears his name whose familiar green and yellow real estate signs have dotted the region’s landscape for more than six decades, has died, according to Howard Hanna Real Estate Services. Hanna was 101.

Allegheny County Executive Rich Fitzgerald referred to Hanna’s legacy by saying in a statement, “Pittsburgh has lost a business pioneer and a civic leader. Howard Hanna began in humble beginnings, and through hard work, he changed the real estate industry. He grew a small Pittsburgh company into one of the nation’s biggest real estate empires.

His legacy lives on through his children Hoddy, Helen, and Ann. The Hanna family continues to contribute to the betterment of Pittsburgh. We are grateful to Howard for all he has done for our community and express our condolences to the Hanna family on his passing.”

Hanna graduated from the University of Pittsburgh with bachelor’s and master’s degrees in business administration and built his real estate empire from a single small office in Shadyside to what today is the fourth-largest real estate company in the United States.

Howard Jr. was married to the late Anne Freyvogel and had three children; Howard W. “Hoddy” Hanna, III, Helen Hanna Casey, and Annie Hanna Cestra. Hanna was the grandfather of 10 grandchildren and 19 great-grandchildren.
