I gave birth to a 10-pound baby girl on stage — or at least that’s the story I acted out. At the Ultimate Speaker Competition, I took the audience from their seats in a hotel ballroom to a hospital’s birthing suite. I shifted abruptly from pushing and panting to explaining the analogy of birthing a business or a book and how it can be difficult and rewarding like becoming a mother. If there’s one thing I’ve learned it’s that speaking and storytelling can be the key to your business success.
Authenticity can humanize.
When a person is listening to your deep, personal and real account, they can identify or relate to what you went through. In this day and age, it’s very easy to filter and make your story look perfect to the outside world. Yet, your ideal client has very real problems that need solving. Letting clients see your true self can endear them to you. You are a person who has experienced pain and the rollercoaster of life, and they have, too. People buy from people they trust and, in my experience, perfection is an ideal that often doesn’t seem real or even trustworthy.
Analogy can teach.
As both an author and formerly tenured professor, I love using analogies to teach concepts and drive the point home. A business-related analogy could be a direct comparison between two different ideas, products or services that explains meaning or strategy. For example, how could you compare a part of your business to going on a journey, building a house, sailing a boat or flying a plane? I have heard amazing keynote addresses that utilize the power of analogies to connect with the audience and teach them about the importance of what the person is selling through their talk. And remember, it doesn’t have to be a product or service you are selling from the stage, it may be inspiration and empowerment that you want the audience to take away from the talk.
Recordings can spread.
From YouTube views to social media shares, your stories can become international sensations touching the hearts of others and attracting the right clients to your business. For example, I recorded a talk based on my latest book Ball Gowns to Yoga Pants that will be airing on Amazon Prime Video’s “Speak Up!” In the video, I tell the world about my journey as an entrepreneur creating my own dream business and brand and share research about other heart-centered entrepreneurs. Right after filming this TV show in front of a live studio audience, I acquired new coaching clients because the audience learned from and related to my talk. Once it is released through the streaming service, I will have another way for future audiences to learn about my businesses and switch from simply watching to buying.
Emotions can endear.
After giving a recent talk, I was blown away with the line of women who approached me afterward with tears in their eyes. They too had a story that they wanted to tell through a book or from the stage. They were ready to monetize their missions, encouraged by the stories during my keynote. My talk moved some to tears, but more importantly, it moved many to take purposeful action.
Stories can attract.
By speaking everywhere from the University of Oxford in England to virtual stages online, I have attracted the right clients. The stories that I told and the information that I taught spoke to the hearts and minds of those in attendance. You can also use your expertise to establish trust and align with what your future customer relates to and needs.
Seek out the stages. Record your talks. Share your stories, products, services and yourself with the world and watch your business grow!
