QR codes, once thought to be a relic of the past, are returning as a hot marketing trend. Thanks to improved smartphone technology and a consumer base seeking more and more digital interactivity in their daily lives, QR codes are one of the most versatile and practical marketing tools out there.

If you’re looking to incorporate this strategy into your marketing plan this year, here are four tips I’ve learned from working with QR codes:

1. Think Beyond Websites

The most traditional use of a QR code is to send someone to a landing page. While driving consumers to your website is certainly useful, it’s not the only option you have. A QR code is really a visual URL, and a URL can direct users to so many experiences: images and GIFs, mp3s, videos — they can even open the app store and direct a consumer to download your app. There are few limits to how you can take advantage of this tool, so get creative.

2. The More, The Merrier

In order for your audience to use your QR code, they need to notice it. Quality does matter here, but much more important, in this case, is quantity. Build a campaign around your code. Put it on your direct mailers, your table tents, your print ads. Make it into a sticker, and stick it on your cash register or front desk, and in bathroom stalls. You can even blast it out on social media and incorporate it into your digital signage. Make sure your QR code is seen, and the chances are higher that it will be effective.

3. Include A Short Link

QR codes are nearly foolproof. That said, even the most reliable tool can hit a snag, and like any other good strategy, it’s imperative to have a backup plan. Be sure to include a short link (like a bit.ly) that directs customers to the same destination as the QR code in all your messaging. This way, in the rare case that someone can’t scan the code or doesn’t have a smartphone, you don’t lose out on marketing to these customers.

4. Make It A Game

Gamification is an extremely effective strategy for engaging customers and driving behaviors because it takes something ordinary and makes it fun to interact with. Turn your QR codes into a game: Make the code mysterious by saying, “Scan for a surprise,” or turn your QR codes into a golden ticket scavenger hunt by letting customers know that one of the 10 codes you share has a unique prize. The possibilities are endless as long as you are imaginative.

Overall, QR codes are cheap and easy to implement, and they have a wide variety of uses. The way you implement this tool for marketing your business is defined by your audience, your brand and your goals. Trust your gut; as long as you innovate, execute and prepare using these tips, you’re sure to see success.
